Movie Guide: The Golden Years - 1968 – The Party
Recommendation: Mid-September and, with this, we start a new season and with it, we focus on our fourteenth and last recommendation of this, excellent, 1968. And without a doubt, as the event well deserves, we are going to do it with our second installment of this genre called comedy. And that, in our case and, paraphrasing a subgenre that was used in a great way in the 30's, we could well classify this recommendation as "
crazy or crazy comedy". And what film are we talking about, the certainly histrionic, "
The party" Do we dismember it?
¿Yes? And so, we find a true jewel of cinema. From the first moment the lights come on, we are transported to a world full of hilarious situations and eccentric characters.
The film, directed by the masterful
Blake Edwards, immerses us in a story that revolves around a British actor, played brilliantly by
Peter Sellers. From the first moment in which
Sellers appears on screen, he gives us a bugle solo that already puts us at the disposal of what awaits us throughout the film: surreal and crazy scenes that will make us laugh, but also make us feel a pinch of sorrow for our main character.
The screenplay, written by
Edwards and his regular collaborator,
Maurice Richlin, is a true masterpiece of comedy. Each dialogue is carefully crafted and each situation is perfectly constructed to elicit the laughter of the viewer. The secondary characters also have a prominent role in the plot, bringing their own touch of madness and contributing to create an environment as crazy as fun.
Tip: Do not miss the excellent staging work done by the drunken waiter. A master interpretation.
But without a doubt, it is
Peter Sellers' interpretation that takes all eyes. Throughout the film,
Sellers demonstrates his enormous talent for comedy, giving life to a character as pathetic as endearing. His ability to change accents and adopt different personalities is simply impressive, and it is impossible not to be captivated by his charisma and his absolute dedication in every scene.
In short, this comedy is a real feast for lovers of absurd and carefree humor. With its perfect combination of intelligent dialogue, comic situations and a memorable performance by
Peter Sellers, this film guarantees laughter and entertainment galore. There is no doubt that this collaboration between
Blake Edwards and
Peter Sellers gives us an authentic classic of comic cinema that will last over time and will continue to draw smiles for many years. You can't miss it! And knowing this, did we gut it?
And so, starting, we find an American comedy that, as we said, within the subgenre of "
crazy comedy" is valued by the rating agency
FilmAffinity with an excellent score of 7.6, placing it in 129th place of the best comedies in history. Its production company was
The Mirisch Corporation and, with a budget of $1.5M, grossed $2.9M. Or what is the same, a profit of 93.33% that is not bad.
And in this, crazy and hilarious comedy that involves the collaboration of the tandem
Blake Edwards-Peter Sellers. A collaboration, where he reveals the two main characters director and actor. And where the British actor as soon as he starts, he will offer us a
horn solo that already puts us at the disposal of what we are going to find throughout the film, scenes of the most surreal and absurd, which leads us to give ourselves a little pity for our main character.
But let's start, with that first character that we have mentioned and that, of course, is without a doubt, the fashion director of the 60's. The American director, born in Tulsa, Oklahoma,
Blake Edwards. Let's go through his career.
And we will start in 1958 with his direction for the romantic comedy "
The Perfect Furlough" with
Tony Curtis,
Linda Cristal and
Janet Leigh.
In 1959 the submarine comedy "
Operation Petticoat" with the heartthrobs on duty,
Cary Grant and, again,
Tony Curtis.
In 1961 his most recognized and iconic comedy, "
Breakfast at Tiffany's" with the delicate and extravagant
Audrey Hepburn and, the handsome
George Peppard.
A year later, in 1962, we find his only Oscar nomination in the category of best director for the romantic drama impregnated in alcohol, "
Days of Wine and Roses" and starring the effervescent actor
Jack Lemmon and actress
Lee Remick.
And in 1963 we found, with another histrionic and iconic comedy, and that for the first time was going to bring together our two protagonists today, director
Blake Edwards and actor
Peter Sellers, along with, always distinguished,
David Niven, his name that you can already imagine "
Pink Panther". And that, of course, at the time, we already recommend.
In 1964 the sequel to this pink tinged panther in, "
A Shot in the Dark" with, again the actor
Peter Sellers, alongside the exuberant German actress
Elke Sommer.
Then, leaving aside the undaunted
inspector Clouseau, we jump the year and, moving on to the year 1965 we find a new comedy, this time of adventures and races throughout the planet earth in, "
The Great Race" and the hand of: the heartthrob
Tony Curtis, evil,
Jack Lemmon and, of course, the beautiful
Natalie Wood.
And finally, we come to today's recommendation, "
The party" in 1958 and that, four years after his last collaboration with director
Blake Edwards, the good and Indian
Peter Sellers this time, absorbs for himself and exclusively, the lens of the viewer.
And so, we are going to take a substantial leap, because we are going to leave, neither more nor less than 21 years later, until we reach the year 1979, where we are going to find the movie "
10" where, we are going to run into two actresses: the first:
Julie Andrews, the caste
Mary Poppins and that, in this comedy, he offers us a surprising top less. And second, the exuberant
Bo Derek, who leads down the street from bitterness to the clumsy and with a huge phlegmon for a face,
Dudley Moore.
And to finish with such a fruitful career, we are going to go 3 years later, to reach the year 1982, and in this, find the musical comedy "
Victor Victoria" whose prominence we give to the incombustible
Julie Andrews who, as a gift, won the Golden Globe for best leading actress.
Consequently and, finished our dissection of the director of our "
The party" of 1958, as we said, the great
Blake Edwards, we will focus our attention on the cinematographic review of our second character, today, the British actor
Peter Sellers.
And so, we begin by listing him, two practically unimportant roles and supporting actor, such as: in the fantastic musical "
Pulgarcito" of 1958 and, the police drama "
Lolita" of 1962.
Just a year before until, in 1963 came to the good of
Peter Sellers, the role that would change everything and that, curiously would be a hysterically comic role, and that circumscribed in a police satirical comedy and that with its name says it all: the great "
Pink Panther" with a triumvirate that will remain over time: the actor
Peter Sellers himself, the director of the film, the great
Blake Edwards and the great American composer
Henry Mancini, in addition to the intervention of the always elegant
David Niven.
Followed, the following year, in 1964, with the next installment of this histrionic character who, plays our, again and again, mentioned
Peter Sellers in, "
A Shot in the Dark", with the same characters, in addition to the intervention of the beautiful German actress Elke Sommer.
And, above all, with the iconic satirical black comedy that shot in the same year, 1964, earned him his first Oscar nomination for best leading actor for: "
Dr. Strangelove" Film that, directed, the always problematic American director
Stanley Kubrick, and in which this was his second collaboration after "
Lolita" of 1962.
In 1968, our now recommended "
The party", where the English actor, and as we are at all times mentioning, performs a tyrannical leading role.
Finally, in 1979 where and accompanied by actress
Shirley MacLaine, our protagonist
Peter Sellers, after his second Oscar nomination, gets his only award for the Golden Globe for best leading actor in the comedy section, for the biographical dramatic comedy "
Being There«
With regard to the supporting actors of this "
The party", and who accompanied the British actor say that, apart from abundant, in any case it is choral, in which we will highlight three actors: the first, the French-American actress,
Claudine Longet. And, above all, the dispute maintained and, in almost silent film mode, between the spectacular performance of actor
Steve Franken who, as a drunken waiter, is repeatedly suffocated, in such a
crazy "
The party", by a furious metre.
So, we end, this review, by the career of this monster of comedy for, without delay and leaving aside the interpretive aspect of this, as we said, crazy "
The party" to focus on the script that gave it birth, and so in this section we find: with the writer director
Blake Edwards and the screenwriters:
Tom and Frank Waldman, both brothers.
Finally, we have the soundtrack of "
The party" and that, as we already mentioned, is the work of the composer born in Little Italy, Ohio,
Henry Mancini. And that, as we said is the usual head composer of director
Blake Edwards, if we do not review the works they collaborated as they are, and listen to some fragments of some of them:
«
Operation Petticoat" in 1959.
«
Breakfast at Tiffany's" in 1961.
«
Days of Wine and Roses" 1962, "
Experiment in Terror" also 1962.
«
Pink Panther" (1963).
«
A Shot in the Dark" of 1964.
«
The Great Race" of 1965.
This own "
The party" from 1968.
«
Darling Lili" from 1970.
«
10" of 1979.
«
S.O.B." of 1981.
«
Victor Victoria" of 1982.
«
That's Life!" from 1986.
And, finally, "
Switch" of 1991.
In total, they shared, 14 soundtracks. There's nothing, right?
And as a tribute to this great director
Blake Edwards and this great actor
Peter Sellers, we end this dissection of this, somewhat crazy comedy "
The party", knowing that you must bear in mind that, as always under the cover, we have left the post published in
Ok.ru and, below its trailer, the link of the complete film in Spanish. So, you just have to click on any of these links, to enjoy the chosen option.
