It is common knowledge that pornography can and will desensitize you. This can lead to you needing to see more graphic images in order to feel fulfilled.
Now imagine a soldier, enraged because his best friend died at the hand of the enemy, feelings of regret, griefing, walking through the remains of the city they are invading, clearing buildings one after another, shooting everyone that moves because he can and he is encouraged to. Eventually he learns to love the feeling of power because he is in control, he is deciding their fate.
Desensitization for violence is dangerous.
This soldier then comes home, his body aching to feel the constant adrenaline pumping through his veins, nothing can help to satisfy his itch. Forced to adjust to an environment where the skills he was taught are no longer applicable, sometimes even hindering him to feel happy, content, satisfied. The emotions he experiences daily can not ever match the intensity of what he was feeling during combat. He feels empty. He needs more extreme thoughts to keep him entertained.
Now ask yourself why is it so common for soldiers to haze each-other in name of brothership? Is it because their work revolves around being in intense situations? They themselves are expected to be intense, controlled, measured, lethal.
Hazing comes from an internal desire to impose one's will, born out of the hierarchical structure the army supports.
Soldiers can build their brothership by putting eachother in extreme situations so they can learn how their comrades react under pressure which is not neccessarily a bad thing. The hazing will enrage you though, the feeling of despair will prepare you for combat. It will make you want to take back control and make you more aggressive in the face of your opponent.
Eventually killing is not enough. The thrill is gone and watching a person collapse does not feel the same anymore. You crave back your internal locus of control but you can not get there because the institution your following orders from is inherently evil. You cannot regain control so you seek for more extreme situations, finding yourself deriving pleasure from torturing people, the more they cry, the better you feel. Just for a moment you regain back that internal control, but once the screaming stops, your aching comes back and you feel powerless again.
These soldiers do not just want to exert power over the enemy anymore but also over their allies and the circle of hazing continues.
Do you know why nothing ever changes for us common people? It is because the ones in power are completely desensitized. It is common knowledge that people in politics, and positions of authority are ranked higher in psychopathy than the average person. So are these people really desensitized or are they lacking empathy? I cannot answer that for you, I can however, tell you that being in a position of power means that you are privy to situations and escalations not seen in day to day life. The role forces you to become tough otherwise you will not survive.
How can the peoples suffering ever truly be heard when the ones who are supposed to listen, emotionally, have their fingers in their ears?
Desensitization to others people suffering can not be avoided from a within a position of power.
Evil needs us to suffer in order to feel empowered.
